For those considering immigration to the U.S. or already here but contemplating a move to another area, I want to share a more honest perspective on the pros and cons of the Detroit metro area. This is a community post, so I will focus on my experiences and stories from those around me.
One of the advantages is economic accessibility. Housing costs are significantly lower compared to coastal metropolitan areas, and as Korean automotive parts companies and battery firms increase their investments in Michigan, job opportunities are emerging for Korean engineers and management positions.
The Korean community in Troy and Novi has established a presence, with infrastructure such as H Mart, Korean restaurants, and Korean churches, which helps with initial settlement. The suburban school districts are excellent, providing a good educational environment for children.
However, there are clear downsides. The safety issues within the city of Detroit cannot be ignored.
While the suburbs are safe, some parts of the city require caution. Living without a car is practically impossible, and Michigan's auto insurance is among the most exorbitantly expensive in the U.S. (averaging over $3,000 per year).
The reason Michigan's auto insurance rates are the highest in the country is not simply due to a high number of accidents. The main reason is that Michigan has long operated a unique auto insurance system. In the past, Michigan applied a No-Fault insurance system that guaranteed unlimited lifetime medical expenses for traffic accident victims. When accidents occurred, insurers had to cover rehabilitation and long-term medical costs that could reach millions of dollars, leading to significantly higher premiums.
Additionally, the high vehicle theft and accident rates in the Detroit area have also contributed to this issue. In some areas, insurance premiums exceeded $4,000 to $6,000 annually.
Winter weather is another factor driving up insurance costs. From November to March, Michigan experiences snow and icy roads, increasing the risk of accidents due to heavy snowfall and black ice. Vehicle corrosion and damage are also common, raising the costs for insurers.
Ultimately, Michigan has become one of the states with the highest auto insurance premiums in the U.S. due to the combination of expensive medical coverage, high accident risks, and long winter driving conditions. Although recent insurance reforms have led to some reductions, rates remain significantly higher than the national average.
Moreover, winters in the Detroit area are long and harsh. Unlike Koreatowns in LA or New York, the environment is not filled with Korean culture, which may be disappointing for those who want to engage with the Korean language and culture daily.
Ultimately, it depends on what priorities you have in life. For those who prioritize career, housing cost efficiency, and children's education, this area may be a good fit, but it may not suit those seeking an urban lifestyle or a strong Korean cultural network.
In immigrant life, there is no place that is universally good; finding a location that fits your situation seems to be the most important thing.
