Things to Know When Looking for a Hospital in Brooklyn - Brooklyn - 1

There's probably no one living in Brooklyn who hasn't been to a hospital at least once, but when an emergency arises or specialized care is needed, it can be confusing to know where to go. I felt the same way at first, so I've put together some information.

The largest and most well-known hospital in Brooklyn is Kings County Hospital Center. This hospital, part of the New York City public hospital system (NYC Health + Hospitals), is located in the Winthrop Street, East Flatbush area and is a large medical institution with over 600 beds.

Designated as a Level 1 trauma center, it has proven capabilities in responding to severe emergency cases. As a public hospital, it plays an important role in the community by providing care for uninsured and low-income patients. It also operates various specialty clinics, particularly noted for its cardiology, endocrinology, and cancer center services.

The second is Maimonides Medical Center. Located in the Borough Park area of Brooklyn, this hospital is a non-profit independent facility and one of the oldest medical institutions in Brooklyn.

With over 700 beds, it ranks among the largest hospitals in New York State based on annual inpatient numbers. It is especially well-regarded in the fields of cardiac surgery, oncology, and pediatrics, and is known for providing interpretation services in various languages, including Hebrew and Yiddish. Given its location in a traditional Jewish community, it also accommodates cultural dietary needs.

Third, I'd like to introduce NYU Langone Hospital — Brooklyn. Originally known as Lutheran Medical Center, it joined the NYU Langone Health system and is located in the Sunset Park area.

This hospital is near a region with a large Asian community, so it offers relatively good access to interpretation services in Asian languages, including Korean. A strong point is that it provides the level of care from the NYU Langone network across emergency medicine, internal medicine, and general surgery.

In addition, there are several other hospitals throughout Brooklyn, such as New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and those affiliated with SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, providing ample medical resources for local residents.

For non-emergency situations, there are also many Urgent Care clinics, making it one of Brooklyn's advantages to quickly address minor symptoms without long wait times.
