Getting Free Turkeys for Thanksgiving: Conditions to Keep in Mind - Fairfax - 1

Last week, I realized it was time to think about Thanksgiving turkeys when I saw pumpkins and chrysanthemum pots lined up at the entrance of the grocery store.

This year, Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 26. It may seem far off just by the date, but the conditions for free turkeys usually start circulating in early November.

So today, I want to summarize how to get turkeys for free or nearly free at grocery stores in our area based on last year's conditions. Please remember that I haven't seen this year's announcements yet, so this is based on last year.

First, let's address the most confusing part. The news often mentions, "Get a free turkey when you collect 400 points at Giant," but this may not refer to the Giant we go to.

Although the names are the same, The GIANT Company, headquartered in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and Giant Food, headquartered in Landover, Maryland, are different companies. Both are part of Ahold Delhaize, which adds to the confusion.

The Giant commonly seen in Washington DC and Northern Virginia is the one in Landover. An article introducing last year's 400-point turkey promotion specified that it was for Pennsylvania stores.

Honestly, I've felt awkward in the past when I told a friend to "collect points at Giant." It's easy to get confused with just the name.

So, where can we realistically aim for in our area? In my opinion, BJ's had the clearest conditions.

BJ's offered a promotion last year where if you spent over $150 in a single transaction between November 1 and 10, you would get a free Butterball turkey. This applied to in-store, app, and website purchases.

Coupons were available in the app or account on November 15 and had to be redeemed by November 26. However, the maximum value of the coupon was $25, and organic turkeys were excluded.

The key point here is that the period is exactly ten days. Since it's a membership warehouse, if you're already a member, it's a pretty good deal to do your shopping during that ten-day window.

Harris Teeter is more about getting a turkey for nearly free. Based on last year's ads, if you had a VIC card, they sold their store brand frozen turkeys for 29 cents per pound.

The condition was an additional purchase of $40 excluding the turkey price, and it was limited to one per person. So even if you bought a 20-pound turkey, it would cost less than $6.

Food Lion sold frozen turkeys for 39 cents per pound with an MVP card for purchases of 10 pounds or more last year. The minimum purchase was $35, and it was also limited to one.

However, I confirmed these prices from ads in North Carolina, so you'll need to check the local store flyers for our area. Prices can vary slightly by location.

Weis Markets offered a free turkey or ham or tofurkey when you accumulated 400 points by earning 1 point for every dollar spent. You could also choose discounted items at 200 points.

Weis does have stores in Virginia, but check if there's one close to you first. If it's far, there's no need to drive just for the points.

Aldi offered a $40 set with 10 servings of a 14-pound Jennie-O turkey instead of a free turkey last year. It's not free, but it reduces the amount you need to shop for.

These promotions often come with fine print. Looking at last year's conditions for Safeway in the western region, items like alcohol, tobacco, milk, and taxes or fees were excluded from the purchase amount.

This means you might think you've hit $150, but a bottle of wine could cause you to fall short. It's important to develop the habit of recalculating after excluding those items from the receipt.

Another thing is that most coupons need to be loaded in the app beforehand to be applied. If you think you can just show your card at checkout, you might miss out.

Also, buying things you wouldn't normally buy just to get a free turkey is ultimately a loss. If you're going to do your Thanksgiving shopping anyway, the key is to consolidate that spending to meet the conditions.

Don't forget to factor in thawing time for frozen turkeys. Thawing in the refrigerator takes quite a while, so if you schedule the pickup too late, you might end up scrambling on the day.

My plan is to do a big shop during BJ's ten-day period in early November and compare prices when the Harris Teeter flyer comes out.

Sometimes I wonder if it's worth all this effort for a free turkey, but when I think of the faces of the people gathered around the table, I realize that saving those few dollars can turn into a pie or a bottle of wine.

If you end up with an extra turkey, there's also the option to donate it to a local food bank. Sharing the joy of receiving is a fitting thing to do this season.

This year's conditions will start coming out between late October and early November. The easiest preparation you can do today is to turn on notifications for each store's app.

As I watch the leaves change color outside, I'm writing my shopping list this evening. I hope everyone has a Thanksgiving that's a little less exhausting and a little more abundant this year.
