Stretching may seem like just a light movement to loosen up the body, but it is an essential habit for physical and mental health.
As we age, muscles and joints can become stiff, but regular stretching can help maintain flexibility, prevent body stiffness, and protect joint health. I have a routine of simply stretching my neck and shoulders in the morning and loosening my legs and back in the evening, and I feel my body becoming much lighter.
The greatest advantage of stretching is that it pleasantly relaxes tense muscles. When sitting all day, the neck and shoulders can become tight, and the back can feel heavy; at this time, even a brief stretch can relieve muscle tension, alleviate fatigue, and refresh the mood.
Additionally, improved blood circulation allows for better oxygen and nutrient supply, which boosts metabolism and accelerates cell regeneration and recovery. So, while it may seem like simply stretching the body, many positive changes are happening inside the body.
Stretching before and after exercise is also important. Doing it before exercise prepares the muscles and helps prevent injuries, while stretching after helps relax tense muscles and speeds up recovery. I always stretch my legs and back lightly before a run, and afterward, I loosen my calves and thighs, which definitely reduces muscle soreness. These small habits can impact exercise performance.
Above all, the hidden power of stretching is felt even more when combined with deep breathing.
Deep breathing is not just about inhaling and exhaling deeply; it is an act that stabilizes both the body and mind. When you take a deep breath, oxygen spreads throughout the body via the lungs and blood, and when you exhale, carbon dioxide and waste are expelled from the body.
As this process is repeated, the muscles relax more smoothly, and the brain receives enough oxygen, calming the mind. Maintaining stretching movements while deep breathing helps release tension in the body and clears the mind.
Therefore, on stressful days, I intentionally take time to do stretching and deep breathing together, which makes the heaviness of the day much lighter. It is not an exaggeration to say it has a meditative effect.
Moreover, stretching not only increases flexibility but also helps alleviate chronic pain. Those with back or shoulder pain may notice a reduction in pain with regular stretching. As the muscles relax, joint movement improves, and the muscles that cause pain become comfortable, reducing discomfort in daily life.
In summary, stretching is the simplest and most effective way to manage both the body and mind simultaneously. It gently relaxes the muscles, aids blood circulation, activates metabolism, and when combined with deep breathing, provides mental stability and healing. If done consistently, it can greatly help maintain a healthy and vibrant life.
