Many people are contemplating whether to move to a warm southern area, stay in their familiar neighborhood, or relocate to a new suburban area after retirement.
Reflecting on my time living in Blue Bell, PA, I realize that this area has more advantages for seniors and retirees than one might expect.
Of course, there are downsides, so I will discuss those honestly.
First, the biggest advantage is access to healthcare. As mentioned earlier, high-quality healthcare systems like Jefferson Health, Main Line Health, and CHOP are within 30 minutes, and there are many specialist clinics nearby in Ambler, Lansdale, and North Wales. As we age, visits to the hospital become more frequent, but in this area, those worries can be significantly reduced. Additionally, telehealth services have recently become well-established, allowing for light consultations to be handled from home.
The second advantage is the safe environment. Montgomery County, including Blue Bell, is considered one of the areas with the lowest crime rates in Pennsylvania. Quiet neighborhoods, well-maintained roads, and low population density create a suitable environment for seniors to walk or go about their daily lives. The fact that one can walk alone at night without feeling overly anxious greatly impacts the quality of life after retirement.
The third advantage is the community and recreational facilities. There are several golf courses, walking trails, and parks near Blue Bell, providing many options for active seniors. Valley Forge National Historical Park is also about a 15-minute drive away, offering leisure activities where one can enjoy history while walking through vast meadows.
Moreover, community centers and senior centers operate in the area, allowing participation in exercise classes, hobby activities, and social gatherings. The AgeWell program run by Montgomery County offers various services for seniors.
In terms of shopping and amenities, there are no inconveniences. Montgomery Mall is right next to Blue Bell, so most shopping needs can be met. Grocery stores, pharmacies, and banks, which are particularly important for seniors, are also nearby. While public transportation can be somewhat inconvenient, the fact that most seniors own cars in this area means it does not significantly hinder daily life. However, it is important to consider that when one reaches an age where driving becomes difficult, transportation options may be limited.
There are also various housing options for seniors near Blue Bell. Independent living facilities, assisted living facilities, and continuing care retirement communities (CCRC) are all available in Montgomery County. The presence of these facilities nearby means that even if one currently lives in a regular home, they won't have to leave the familiar area when future needs arise.
The strategy of 'aging in place' while gradually increasing the level of support is quite realistically achievable in this area.
Of course, there are downsides. The cost of living, especially housing prices and property taxes, is quite high. Property taxes in Montgomery County are among the highest in Pennsylvania, which can be a burden for retirees living on fixed incomes. The winter weather is also cold and snowy, typical of the Northeast.
For those who prefer warmer areas, it may be worth comparing to Florida or Arizona. Nevertheless, if family is in this area and there are familiar healthcare providers and community, Blue Bell is definitely a worthwhile place to stay after retirement.
