To understand San Antonio, you first need to look at the city's structure.
San Antonio is divided into 10 council districts, each represented by a city council member.
The city covers an area of about 465 square miles (1,204 km²), which is nearly twice the size of Seoul (605 km²).
Thinking of it as almost two times the size of all of Seoul makes it easier to understand.
Therefore, even with the same San Antonio address, the atmosphere and living environment can vary greatly by area.
If you are new to the area, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with the different neighborhoods using a map.
Downtown is the historical and tourist center, home to the Alamo, River Walk, City Hall, and the Convention Center.
To the north, Midtown features a mix of old residential areas and commercial zones, including historic districts like King William.
Heading northwest, you will find the Medical Center area, which houses the South Texas Medical Center, surrounded by hospitals, research facilities, apartments, and a relatively high concentration of Asian businesses.
Further north, emerging residential and commercial areas like Stone Oak, Alamo Ranch, The Rim, and La Cantera can be found.
The South Side has a strong Mexican cultural influence and a more working-class atmosphere, while the West Side has deep roots in an old Hispanic community.
The East Side is home to African American history and culture, and there are recent signs of redevelopment in the area.
The Northeast is close to Randolph Air Force Base, where many military families reside, and features typical suburban housing.
There are also independent cities with separate administrative powers around San Antonio, such as Alamo Heights, Castle Hills, Olmos Park, Terrell Hills, Hollywood Park, and Hill Country Village.
While the address may look like San Antonio, it could actually be a separate city with its own police, administration, and school district.
When considering the entire Bexar County, satellite cities like Leon Valley, Converse, Universal City, Live Oak, Schertz, and Helotes are also included.
When looking for a home, do not just consider the name "San Antonio"; check the actual city boundaries, school districts, and property tax structures as well.
Understanding these differences will help you make a more realistic assessment of living areas and housing costs.
