When I hear lyrics like "She's probably in Texas" in the country songs I often listen to, it feels different these days.
In the past, I would have just thought of it as song lyrics, but now it feels real.
"Oh, she probably started fresh somewhere."
And Texas comes to mind quite naturally as that place.
This is the current vibe in America. If someone suddenly disappears, friends might say something like this.
"Them? They probably went to Texas."
This phrase has become a mix of half-joke, half-reality.
These days, a common phrase among young people and retirees in America is "I'm going to Texas."
In the past, it was more common to hear about going to New York or LA, but the atmosphere has changed.
Especially among those in their 20s and 30s, Texas frequently appears on the list of "places worth moving to."
However, it doesn't have that glamorous hot spot vibe we might think of. Instead, there are very practical reasons at play.
In the last five years, Texas has been one of the states where the most people have moved to in America.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of people are coming from other states. It's not just a feeling; it's a reality that "the population is continuously growing."
And importantly, a significant portion of that population includes young people.
Gen Z and Millennials are actually moving to Texas.
The reasons are simple. The first is money. More specifically, the cost of living.
These days, the places young people are leaving the most are California and New York.
The reason is straightforward: it's too expensive. Rent is outrageous. It costs thousands of dollars just to get one room.
But in Texas, the costs are relatively much lower. With the same amount of money, you can get a much larger home or even buy a house outright.
So, it makes sense when people say, "With the rent for LA, I could buy a house in Texas." It sounds like a joke, but it's true.
The second reason is job opportunities.
In the past, good jobs were associated with Silicon Valley or New York, but these days, many companies are moving to Texas.
This is partly due to the tax structure and costs. So, job opportunities are moving there as well.
For young people, the choice becomes simple: "I go where it costs less and where there are jobs." Hence, they are moving to Texas.
The third reason is the character of the cities. While Texas is often seen as one image, each city has its own vibe.
This is another interesting point.
Austin is almost a young, vibrant city. It has music, startups, IT, and a bit of a hip atmosphere.
People even refer to it as a "mini Silicon Valley." In reality, many young professionals gather there.
Dallas is a bit different. It has a stronger sense of money. It's centered around corporate headquarters, finance, and careers. It feels like a "city for working."
Houston has a strong diversity of industries. It mixes energy, healthcare, and aviation, leading to a variety of job types.
San Antonio is relatively quiet. The cost of living is lower, and the educational environment is good. Therefore, the population is gradually increasing.
When you look at it this way, Texas feels less like a single city and more like "a large board with multiple options."
Thus, the image among young people in America is summarized like this.
New York represents culture and dreams. LA is about entertainment. But Texas is different.
"It's a place to earn money, buy a house, and live realistically."
So sometimes you hear phrases like, "Play in New York, dream in LA, and settle in Texas." It's funny but oddly true.
The interesting point comes from here.
The main reason for the influx of people to Texas is not that Texas is hot, but rather that most of it is due to economic factors.
Data on population movement in the U.S. shows that Texas consistently ranks among the top states for net inflow, especially due to lower housing prices and living costs compared to California and New York.
Additionally, the absence of state income tax and active corporate relocations lead to job growth as well.
In other words, Texas is seen as a realistic option that offers both stability in living costs and job opportunities.
