When I first learned about community colleges in the U.S., I honestly thought, "Why go for a two-year degree?"

In Korea, we tend to think of four-year universities first. However, after living in the U.S. for a few years, my perspective has completely changed. Especially in California, community colleges are not just simple two-year schools; they are a very realistic option for saving on tuition while aiming for transfer to prestigious universities.

One of the most accessible schools near San Fernando is Mission College. Located in Sylmar, it is only about a 10-minute drive from San Fernando. It is part of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) and is one of the representative public community colleges in the LA area.

The biggest advantage is definitely the tuition. For California residents, the tuition is about $46 per credit. Assuming a typical course load of 24 to 30 credits per year, the annual tuition is around $1,100 to $1,400. When including living expenses, many prepare for a total annual cost of about $25,000 to $35,000. Still, compared to attending a UC or private university for all four years from the start, this can lead to substantial savings on overall educational costs.

Mission College is particularly well-known for its transfer system. Many students complete their general education and foundational major courses over two years while managing their GPA, then transfer to UC or California State University (CSU). California has a TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) program that guarantees transfer opportunities to participating UC campuses if certain credit and GPA requirements are met. While there are schools like UCLA or UC Berkeley that are not part of the TAG program, there are stable transfer pathways to other UC campuses. Additionally, the ADT (Associate Degree for Transfer) system for transferring to CSU is well-implemented, making it easy to prepare strategically.

Community colleges are becoming an increasingly popular choice for Korean students as well. Some students come to the U.S. after graduating high school in Korea with the goal of entering prestigious universities, while others transfer from Korean universities to the U.S. Many prefer to adapt to English and academics at a community college before aiming for transfer rather than preparing for the highly competitive UC freshman admissions from the start. In fact, there are Korean student associations and Korean international student communities at community colleges in the LA area, facilitating active information exchange.

Another advantage is vocational education. Various career-focused programs and certificate courses are offered in fields such as nursing, business, computer science, IT, cybersecurity, accounting, automotive repair, culinary arts, and medical assisting. There are also well-established ESL programs for immigrants with limited English skills, and many evening classes and online courses for adult learners, making it possible for students to study while working.

Ultimately, Mission College is not just a "two-year college." It is a practical educational institution where students can save significantly on tuition while preparing for transfer to UC or CSU, or quickly learn new skills to prepare for employment.
