At first, I thought that since Plano is a suburban city, the hospitals wouldn't be very large.
However, as I looked into it, I found that the quality was much higher than I expected. I was impressed by the medical system, which is comparable to that of major cities.
The most notable facility is Medical City Plano. It is an acute care general hospital with about 600 beds and the only Level I Trauma Center in Collin County. A Level I trauma center means it has the highest level of emergency medical facilities capable of treating severe trauma patients 24/7. It also operates the Sarah Cannon Cancer Hospital, strengthening its capabilities in cancer treatment. Currently, a $108 million expansion project is underway, aiming to significantly increase bed and surgical space by spring 2027.
The second most utilized hospital is Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano. Located to the west of Plano, this hospital is highly regarded in neurosurgery, cardiovascular treatment, and orthopedics. It has received Comprehensive Stroke Center certification, recognizing its capabilities in treating stroke patients, and is currently undergoing a large project to expand its new wards and facilities. As the population in North Texas rapidly increases, the scale of medical services continues to expand.
If you are concerned about heart disease, you cannot overlook Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano.
As the name suggests, it specializes in cardiovascular diseases and is highly trusted in heart surgeries, procedures, and emergency heart care. It operates a 24-hour heart emergency center and is continuously expanding its facilities, establishing itself as a leading heart specialty medical institution in North Texas.
For families raising children, the presence of Children's Medical Center Plano is a significant advantage. It is one of the first full-service children's hospitals in North Texas, offering a wide range of services from pediatric emergency care to inpatient treatment and specialized care. Recently, it has been expanding its wards to further enhance pediatric medical services in response to the growing local population.
The advantage of Plano is not just that there are many hospitals. A major strength is that trauma centers, cancer specialty treatment, heart specialty hospitals, and children's specialty hospitals are located close to each other. Most can be reached within 10 to 20 minutes by car, making them quite accessible in emergencies.
Of course, medical costs are not low. Due to the nature of the U.S. healthcare system, the burden can vary significantly depending on insurance. However, when considering the criterion of "Can I receive necessary medical services nearby?", Plano is a highly competitive area among suburban cities.
Many people only look at schools or shopping centers when searching for a home, but I recommend also considering hospitals. Health is something we often don't feel until an emergency arises, and realizing that there is a high-quality hospital close to home can provide immense peace of mind. For this reason, I believe Plano has ample reasons to be regarded as a great city for families to live in for a long time.
