When living in Bellevue and considering college admissions or further education, the first question that comes to mind is, 'What schools can I attend in this area?'
The Seattle-Eastside region offers more options than you might think. Let's take a look at three representative schools.
Each school has a distinctly different character, so I'll also explore which school might be the right fit for different individuals. Since I work in the tech industry in Bellevue, I've had the opportunity to engage with these schools from various angles. Experiencing the job market firsthand, I've naturally observed which graduates come from which schools and in what positions.
The first is Bellevue College. Located on the Bellevue campus, this school is the largest open admission institution in Washington State. It offers over 90 vocational and technical programs, with more than 30,000 students enrolled each year. In January 2026, it will celebrate its 60th anniversary with commemorative events.
As a community college, it also operates a four-year bachelor's degree program. There's a Path to UW program that supports transfers to the University of Washington, and in January 2026, it will establish a guaranteed transfer agreement with Western Washington University.
Tuition is significantly cheaper compared to four-year universities, and the 100-acre campus is located about 16 kilometers from Seattle. It's a practical school well-suited for those looking to enter the tech field quickly.
The second is the University of Washington. Commonly referred to as UW, this school is the top research university in Washington State, particularly renowned in the fields of computer science, engineering, and medicine. In addition to the Seattle main campus, there are Bothell and Tacoma campuses, making it reasonably accessible from the Eastside.

With Amazon and Microsoft headquarters located in Bellevue, many UW graduates find jobs in the local tech industry.
If you want to work locally after graduation, the UW network operates very strongly. Bellevue residents aiming for UW often choose to earn good grades at Bellevue College and transfer.
I've actually seen quite a few people take this route. It's a reasonable choice since it saves on tuition and allows you to earn a UW diploma.
The third is Seattle University. Located in downtown Seattle, this Jesuit-based private university features a curriculum that combines liberal arts and professional education. It is known for strong programs in law, business, nursing, and education.
Being smaller than UW, campus life is more intimate. You can take I-90 from Bellevue into Seattle, but considering the commuting traffic, many students choose to live in dorms rather than commute. It's often recommended for students who value an educational environment that emphasizes values and community.
Which school to choose among the three depends on your goals. If quick employment and practical skills are your aim, Bellevue College is a good fit. If you want a strong network and research experience in the Washington tech scene, UW is the way to go. If you prefer a small private environment with a broad liberal arts education and professional preparation, Seattle University has its strengths.
Since Bellevue is a tech-centric area, all three schools have some connection to the local job market. No matter which school you attend, there's definitely a geographical advantage in being close to the Bellevue-Seattle tech hub.
In the rapidly changing tech environment, what you can do is becoming increasingly important than where you graduated from, and in that sense, schools like Bellevue College, which focus on practical skills, are much more valuable than before.
