Indianapolis is located near the center of Indiana, with several cities within a 50-mile radius.
When planning a weekend getaway or a day trip, or if you're looking for a job or a home outside of Indy, knowing about these surrounding cities can be helpful. As a city primarily designed for cars, most of the roads are based on highways like I-65, I-70, I-74, and US-31.
Looking at the satellite cities right next to Indy, to the north are Carmel (about 15 miles), Noblesville (about 22 miles), Fishers (about 20 miles), and Westfield (about 25 miles). All of these are part of Hamilton County and are upscale suburban areas where many professional families commute from downtown Indy.
These areas have good school districts, stable safety, and housing prices that are higher than the Indy average. Carmel is particularly popular for its Arts and Design District, Carmel Clay Schools district, and its tidy downtown square. To the south are Greenwood (about 12 miles) and Franklin (about 25 miles), which offer a quiet and comfortable suburban atmosphere.
Expanding the radius to 50 miles reveals a few independent cities. About 45 miles to the northeast is Anderson (population about 55,000). It was once famous as a GM factory town but is currently undergoing redevelopment after industrial decline, and Harrah's Hoosier Park casino is located in this city.
About 26 miles to the southeast is Shelbyville (population about 20,000), which is home to the Horseshoe Indianapolis casino. About 40 miles to the east is Greenfield (population about 25,000), and to the west are Plainfield and Avon, which are growing suburban areas in Hendricks County.
There are also cities just slightly beyond the 50-mile radius that are worth knowing about for day trips.
Columbus, IN, about 47 miles to the south, is quite famous for its architectural landmarks. Public buildings and churches designed by world-renowned architects like Eero Saarinen and I.M. Pei can be found throughout the city, attracting visitors for architectural tours. Although it is a small city with a population of about 40,000, it has a well-developed tourism infrastructure.
About 60 miles to the north is Lafayette, home to the main campus of Purdue University, where many Indy residents go to watch Big Ten sports games. About 51 miles to the south is Bloomington, which houses the main campus of Indiana University and has a unique cultural atmosphere and great dining options typical of a college town. It's also nice to catch a Big Football game at the IU Stadium or explore the restaurants around the Monroe County Courthouse square in downtown Bloomington.
When visiting these surrounding cities from Indy, be sure to check Waze or Google Maps. During rush hours, I-465 (the Indianapolis outer loop) and I-65 north-south can get congested. However, on weekend mornings or afternoons, most trips can be made within 30 minutes to an hour. Since Indy is such a large city, actual travel times can vary depending on your destination.
