Gaithersburg is a city located about 25 miles northwest of Washington D.C., and is one of the major cities in Montgomery County, Maryland. It is adjacent to Rockville, forming a single living area, but the atmosphere is slightly different.

While Rockville is a neat and sophisticated suburban city, Gaithersburg has a more diverse and vibrant feel. Looking at the Maryland map, it is situated in the middle of the area that stretches north of Washington D.C., characterized by excellent access to the capital while being relatively close to nature.

This city began to grow in the late 19th century with the development of railroad transportation, and remnants of the old train station and historical buildings still remain today. 'Olde Towne Gaithersburg' preserves the atmosphere of that era, with red brick buildings and an old clock tower telling the city's past. This area is still a hub for local festivals, markets, and outdoor performances, making it the best place to experience Gaithersburg's warm local culture.

Thanks to its proximity to Washington D.C., transportation is very convenient in Gaithersburg. The I-270 highway runs through the city center, and many people commute using the MARC commuter train and the Washington Metro Red Line. It takes about 40 minutes to drive to Washington and 10 minutes to Rockville, making it a very popular residential area for those working in the capital region. Additionally, the bus routes are well organized, so living without a car is not difficult.

The city's population is around 70,000, making it quite large within Montgomery County. The racial composition is very diverse, with a mix of white, Asian, Hispanic, and Black residents. This diversity enriches the food culture and local community, creating a strong multicultural atmosphere. You can hear not only English but also Spanish, Chinese, and Korean, making it a city with an international feel.

Another feature of Gaithersburg is its economic stability and educational level. This area is one of Maryland's representative technology and science cities, included in the I-270 biotechnology corridor along with Rockville. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is located here, along with many biotech companies, pharmaceutical firms, and research institutions.

As a result, many engineers, researchers, and medical professionals live here, and the average income is higher than the Maryland average. However, the city is so large that upscale housing developments coexist with middle-class communities and affordable apartment complexes, contributing to high social diversity.

The educational environment is also excellent. The Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has one of the top public education systems in the United States, and the high schools in Gaithersburg are well-regarded. In particular, Quince Orchard High School and Gaithersburg High School are known for their academic achievements and active sports programs. Nearby, there is also a campus of Montgomery College, providing ample educational opportunities before and after college.

The weather is similar to Rockville. Summers are hot and humid, but winters are relatively mild. The average summer temperature is around 85°F (29°C), while winter daytime temperatures hover around 40°F (5°C), with distinct four seasons. In spring and fall, the weather is mild and the skies are clear, encouraging residents to frequently use parks and walking trails.

Gaithersburg's downtown is divided into two parts. One is the historic Old Town, and the other is the modern lifestyle center 'Rio Lakefront.' Rio Lakefront is a mixed-use commercial area centered around an artificial lake, featuring shopping malls, restaurants, cinemas, and walking paths. In the evening, the lights by the lake turn on and music plays, creating a youthful vibe in the city. In contrast, Old Town offers the charm of a traditional American small town. The natural coexistence of these two atmospheres is Gaithersburg's greatest appeal.

There are many community events, parks, playgrounds, libraries, and cultural centers, making it a great environment for raising children. The cost of living is slightly lower than in Rockville, but due to its location near Washington, real estate values are steadily rising.
