One of the most common questions among Koreans is, "Is Gwinnett County better, or is Fulton County better?"
Both counties are representative residential areas of Atlanta, but their living environments and characteristics are quite different.
It cannot be definitively said which is better, as the choice depends on each family's priorities.
The biggest advantage of Gwinnett County is its Korean community. Areas like Duluth, Suwanee, and Lawrenceville have a concentration of Korean businesses, churches, and markets, making it possible to live with just Korean language skills.
There are H Mart, Han Ah Reum Market, dozens of Korean restaurants, and well-developed services such as Korean hospitals, hair salons, and insurance companies.
Housing prices are generally lower than in northern Fulton County, and Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) consistently receive good ratings in Georgia. A downside is that commuting to downtown Atlanta can be somewhat far, and there is no MARTA connection, making a car essential.
Northern Fulton County includes areas like Johns Creek, Alpharetta, and Roswell.
This area is known for its excellent school districts, especially the schools in Johns Creek and Alpharetta, which rank among the top in Georgia.
Housing developments are well-maintained, and neighborhood parks and commercial facilities are balanced. Recently, the Korean population has been increasing, leading to a rapidly forming Korean business community. However, the density of the Korean community is lower compared to Gwinnett County, and housing prices are generally higher.
DeKalb County cannot be overlooked either. It includes cities like Decatur, Tucker, and Stone Mountain, which are close to downtown Atlanta.
Access to Emory University and Georgia State University is also good. However, there are concerns about school districts and safety in some areas, so it's important to check details carefully when choosing a place to live.
In conclusion, if you value connection with the Korean community and have a limited budget, Gwinnett County is advantageous.
If you prioritize top school districts and a clean living environment, consider northern Fulton County. If commuting convenience to downtown Atlanta is your top priority, it's advisable to look into parts of DeKalb County or areas near Buckhead and Midtown.
If possible, I strongly recommend visiting each area over the weekend before moving and listening to the opinions of the local Korean community.
