It is considered one of the most liberal areas in the western United States. In particular, urban areas including the state capital Salem and the largest city Portland have a very strong Democratic support base. There is a clear support for policies such as environmental protection, social equality, and the expansion of public healthcare.
In contrast, the eastern and southern regions have a completely different atmosphere. These areas tend to have a relatively conservative Republican support base. They have an economy centered around agriculture and livestock, and there is a notable tendency to strongly support gun ownership rights. Even within the state of Oregon, there is a significant political gap between urban and rural areas.
Looking at modern political trends, Oregon has chosen Democratic candidates in every presidential election since 1988. The conflict between environmental policies and economic development has become a core issue in state politics. Issues such as forest protection, development regulations, and job creation are major topics of debate in every election.
Portland symbolizes Oregon's political and cultural orientation. This city is famous for its slogan "Keep Portland Weird." The hipster culture and progressive lifestyle are strongly established. It has a bike-friendly city structure, and organic food, craft beer, and independent bookstores are naturally integrated into daily life. There is a high level of concern for environmental issues, creating an atmosphere that values eco-friendly products and sustainability throughout the city. A common joke about Portland residents is that they are often seen as "working as baristas or artists while being very interested in healing crystals."
Eugene is known as a center for progressive activism. This city is a symbol of environmentalists and hippie culture. It values a life in harmony with nature and has a strong community-centered lifestyle. A common joke about Eugene is that "they love recycling so much that they want to say something to anyone who doesn't recycle."
Eastern Oregon is distinctly different from the overall atmosphere of the state. This region maintains a traditional lifestyle centered around agriculture and livestock. Conservative values are strong, and small community culture is prominent. A common joke is that "people from eastern Oregon laugh at Portlanders riding bikes while driving their 4x4 trucks."
Canon Beach is an upscale coastal city formed along the Pacific coastline. It has a strong image of art galleries, resorts, and a vacation spot for the wealthy. A stereotype about this place is that "people drink wine while facing the sea breeze and go surfing whenever they get the chance."
Beaverton and Hillsboro are centers of the tech industry. This area is known as the 'Silicon Forest,' home to several tech companies including Intel. There is a joke that "Hillsboro residents code while drinking coffee and have lunch in Portland," indicating how deeply tech culture is embedded in daily life.
Thus, Oregon has a unique structure where political orientations, lifestyles, and cultures vary dramatically even within the same state. This diversity can be said to be Oregon's greatest characteristic and charm.
