These days, the morning air in San Francisco is... well, to be honest, it's so cool that it's cold.
I regret going out in short sleeves and end up coming back to put on a thin knit or cardigan.
Usually, in summer, I should be carrying iced coffee, but this year, I can't let go of my hot latte.
The famous quote attributed to Mark Twain (though he didn't actually say it).
"The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco"
"The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco"
This year, it doesn't sound like a joke, haha, it's the reality here these days.
This summer, San Francisco is experiencing the coldest summer in decades.
The average temperature in July, including day and night, is 59 degrees... which is about 1 degree lower than usual.
The daytime high is also hovering around 64 degrees, and there have only been 14 days this year that exceeded 70 degrees.
Originally, there should be at least 14 days over 70 degrees between June 1 and July 25, but it's almost half that.
According to the weather service, San Francisco is having the coldest summer since 1982.
The reason is that a strong marine layer is thickly covering the land, blocking sunlight, and cold sea fog is enveloping the city.
So, it's often cloudy or filled with fog, and it's even strange when the weather app shows a sun icon.
This year, especially in July, the term 'No-Sky July' didn't come about for no reason.
Typically, July is the driest month in San Francisco, but this time, it rained on 4 out of 7 days. That's a whopping six times more precipitation than usual.
My neighborhood is no exception. Even when I go for a walk at 9 AM, I feel a chill, and even when the sun is out, the wind is around 63-65 degrees, making it awkward to wear short sleeves.
A white grandmother I met in the apartment complex said, "It feels like October, not July!" while wearing a parka.
These days, I don't even think of it as summer.
My short-sleeve clothes are pushed to one side, and thin knits and hoodies are my daily look.
My friends say, "It's nice not to have to turn on the air conditioning~" But... honestly, it's a summer where I don't even need a fan... sometimes I do think, "I want to see some bright sunshine."
Fortunately, according to the weather forecast, this cool weather will continue until early August.
Of course... this cool summer is part of San Francisco's charm.
But next time, I hope it's a little less 'cool'.
