The police in Jackson City maintain public safety in a complex reality. They are referred to as JPD and patrol the entire city divided into four districts. From traffic enforcement to serious crimes, drug investigations, and K9 units, the scale is quite large, but in reality, there is always a shortage of personnel. With a population of about 170,000, there are less than 300 officers on the ground, so the area one officer has to cover is really vast. As a result, there are often delays in response during busy weekend nights or in certain districts where reports pile up.

The Jackson police were established long ago, around the time the city was founded. It is an organization with nearly 200 years of history. However, there have been many controversies over that long period. In the 1970s, during a student protest at Jackson State University, police fired shots that resulted in a student's death, and recently, there have been ongoing controversies over excessive force during arrests.

In a city where the majority of the population is Black, such incidents have shaken the trust between the police and the residents. Therefore, these days, there has been a significant shift towards 'community policing,' where officers meet and talk directly with residents to build trust.

In terms of public safety, Jackson is still classified as a dangerous city in the United States. Just looking at the number of homicides, there were 118 in 2023 and about 111 in 2024. Fortunately, this is a slight decrease compared to the past, but in relation to the population, it remains one of the cities with a high murder rate. Especially during nighttime, crimes such as gun violence and theft occur frequently, and in the neglected areas on the outskirts of the city, incidents of break-ins in vacant homes also happen often.

That said, the police are not sitting idle. Recently, they have been conducting a large-scale public safety operation called 'Operation Unified.' This focuses on drug trafficking enforcement, illegal gun recovery, and dismantling violent organizations. They are also increasing surveillance cameras throughout the city and improving the system to ensure patrol cars can respond within 1-2 minutes after a crime occurs by operating a real-time crime response center.

The problem lies in the conflict with a separate police organization operated by the state government, known as the 'Capitol Police.' The area around the state capitol is under the jurisdiction of the state police, who have more authority than the city police, leading to pushback from Jackson City Hall and residents. Many express the opinion that "it is unfair for external forces to control city safety."

Ultimately, the reality of policing in Jackson is just this: there is a shortage of personnel, public safety is challenging, but efforts to improve continue. Residents often say, "It has gotten a little better than before." Police cars are seen more frequently while walking down the street, cameras are installed on major streets in the city, and patrols have increased in dangerous areas.
