One of the great things about living in Flushing is that the healthcare infrastructure is quite well established! There are hospitals with Korean translation services and many clinics tailored to the Korean community, which I think is really fortunate. Today, I will introduce three major hospitals in Flushing!
The first is New York-Presbyterian Queens (NYP Queens). Located in the Queens area, just a 10-minute drive from downtown Flushing, this hospital is part of the New York-Presbyterian hospital network and is a comprehensive hospital with major departments including emergency, cardiology, cancer center, obstetrics and gynecology, and orthopedics. Notably, they have multilingual services (including Korean, Chinese, and Spanish) with interpreters available, so you can use their services without worrying about language barriers. It is considered one of the most trusted hospitals among the Korean community in Queens.
The second is Flushing Hospital Medical Center. Established in 1884, this historic hospital is the most accessible comprehensive hospital for residents of Flushing. It operates departments such as emergency medicine, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and psychiatry, and actively participates in community health programs. They also run a sliding scale (income-based cost adjustment) program for low-income immigrant families, ensuring that those facing financial difficulties can receive medical services. They provide Korean translation services, making it a good option for taking your parents!
The third is Mount Sinai Queens. As part of the top-tier Mount Sinai Health System in New York, its main facility is in Astoria, but it operates a network of specialized clinics covering Flushing and surrounding areas. They particularly excel in cardiology, oncology, neurology, and orthopedics, and have a collaborative system with specialists at the Manhattan main facility for complex cases. While the wait time for appointments may be somewhat long, it is a reliable place to seek professional care when needed.
In addition to these three, there are dozens of private internal medicine, dermatology, and dental clinics run by Korean doctors in Flushing. Clinics that can communicate in Korean are concentrated around Main Street and Northern Boulevard, making it convenient to use these clinics for minor symptoms or regular check-ups. If you don't have insurance, you can also use the public health center operated by Queens County (NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens), which also offers multilingual services.
When looking for health-related information in Flushing, you might also want to check out the health programs offered by Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York (KCS). They provide community-based health services such as free health screenings, diabetes and hypertension management classes, and early cancer detection programs, which are especially useful for seniors. In our neighborhood of Flushing, it seems like we can worry less about health issues!
