Located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Salt Lake City, the view of the snow-capped mountains behind the campus is truly impressive.
Although it is in the middle of the city, it is a place that harmonizes with nature, and many students enjoy skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer.
The school's history dates back to 1850, when it opened as the first institution of higher education in Utah under the name 'University of Deseret.'
It was renamed 'University of Utah' in 1892, and after moving to its current campus in 1900, it became the center of the Utah state university system. Known as 'The U,' it is a beloved university among locals and is quite large in scale.
As of fall 2023, there are 26,827 undergraduate students and 8,409 graduate students, making the total student population over 35,000. It is the second-largest public university in Utah. Interestingly, this school is not only in the U.S. but also has an international campus in Songdo, Incheon, South Korea.
The 'Utah Asia Campus' opened in 2014 and operates with the same curriculum as the main campus, allowing Korean students to earn an American degree. The research level is also quite high, as it is a full member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and classified as a top-tier research university, or Tier 1 (R1), by Carnegie Classification. In simple terms, it is recognized as a 'research-intensive school' in the U.S.
In fact, in 2022, the National Science Foundation (NSF) provided $670 million in research funding, ranking it 47th among U.S. universities in research funding received. It is particularly strong in the fields of medicine, engineering, computer science, new materials, and life sciences.
The hospital system is also impressive. Centered around the University of Utah Hospital, there are four hospitals and 12 regional clinics, including the Huntsman Cancer Institute and the Moran Eye Center. Among them, the Huntsman Cancer Institute is known as the best cancer specialty hospital in the western region.

Historically, it has produced many distinguished graduates. To date, there have been 22 Rhodes Scholars, 4 Nobel Prize winners, 3 Turing Award winners, 8 MacArthur Fellows, 2 astronauts, and several Pulitzer Prize winners.
With all this, it seems that it is more than just a simple 'state university.' The campus scenery is said to be beautiful, with traditional buildings alongside state-of-the-art research facilities, and especially the campus view with snow-capped mountains in winter often appears in postcards representing Utah.
Additionally, being near Utah's tech valley, known as 'Silicon Slopes,' makes it advantageous for students to enter IT companies or startups after graduation. There are also well-established startup support programs, making student entrepreneurship active.
Looking at it this way, the University of Utah is not just a school that excels in academics but serves as a bridge connecting the local community and the world. The open atmosphere of Salt Lake City and the diverse campus culture are attractive. Thus, 'The U' remains not just a school for students but a part of their identity and pride.
