How to Get to JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Airports from Brooklyn - Brooklyn - 1

Getting to the airport from Brooklyn can be quite a challenge.

In Manhattan, you can just take the subway, but in Brooklyn, your options vary depending on the situation.

After a few frustrating experiences, I'd like to share what I've learned.

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is the closest international airport to Brooklyn. While it's close in a straight line, getting there by public transport can be a bit complicated.

The most common method is to take the A subway line, get off at Howard Beach station, and transfer to the JFK AirTrain.

From downtown Brooklyn (Jay St-MetroTech), it takes about 45 to 60 minutes in total.

The AirTrain fare adds an additional $8.25 when using it within the airport.

Alternatively, you can transfer to the AirTrain at Jamaica station (using the J/Z subway line).

Taxis or Uber rides from various areas in Brooklyn to JFK typically take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your starting point and traffic, costing around $40 to $80.

Including tips and airport surcharges, it can exceed $100.

How to Get to JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Airports from Brooklyn - Brooklyn - 2

LaGuardia Airport (LGA) primarily serves domestic flights and is located in Queens. There are no direct subway lines connecting Brooklyn to the airport, so it's common to take the subway to Queens and then transfer to the Q70-SBS bus (the bus that connects to LGA) or use a taxi/Uber.

By taxi or rideshare, it takes about 40 to 75 minutes, costing around $35 to $65. Newark International Airport (EWR) is the farthest from Brooklyn, located in New Jersey, but it can be an option for certain international flights. You can use the NJ Transit Air Train from Penn Station in Manhattan or take an Uber/taxi directly.

When using NJ Transit from Brooklyn, it often takes over 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The convenience of getting to train stations is also worth noting. Major train stations in New York, such as Penn Station (Amtrak, NJ Transit, LIRR) and Grand Central Terminal (Metro-North), are located in Manhattan, so you need to travel to Manhattan first to take a train from Brooklyn. It takes about 20 to 35 minutes to get from Brooklyn to Penn Station using the A/C/E or 2/3 lines.

For the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), there are lines departing from Atlantic Terminal (located in downtown Brooklyn), making it convenient for travel towards Long Island. Atlantic Terminal is connected to the Barclays Center/Atlantic Ave station, which serves the B/D/N/Q/R/2/3/4/5 subway lines, providing good accessibility. In conclusion, JFK is relatively manageable, LGA can be a bit of a hassle, and EWR requires some preparation.
