These days, the price of flight tickets varies greatly depending on when and how you purchase them.

A round trip from LA to New York can be as cheap as $400, but if you buy it last minute, you might only find expensive tickets over $1,800.

That's a staggering difference of $1,400 for the same flight ticket, ranging from $400 to $1,800.

Therefore, you should regularly check flight information on sites like Kayak.com to avoid overpaying.

Here's the secret: the basic rule is to check prices 21 to 30 days before your flight.

Platforms like Kayak, Google Flights, and Hopper provide price trend analysis.

This is usually when airlines implement their 'remaining seat discount' strategy.

If you buy too early? You become an early bird, but not in a good way.

If you buy too late? The only seats left are near the bathroom, where you'll suffer from the smell until your nose goes numb, or tickets that require 2-3 layovers and take over 10 hours.

So, here's my strategy: set an alarm 3-4 weeks before departure – use the price tracking feature on Kayak or Google Flights.

Book on Tuesday or Wednesday – strangely enough, prices often drop significantly on Tuesday mornings.

This is because airlines are settling accounts and organizing tickets over the weekend.

And if time allows! Layovers can be part of the adventure

This applies only to those with some time on their hands. For someone like me, who has plenty of time, it's a great tip.

For example, a one-way flight from LA to New York is $350 non-stop, but if you include a layover in Denver or Chicago, you can find tickets for $180.

If the layover time is over 5 hours? I just go outside the layover airport.

I take an Uber to the city, grab a quick coffee, take a photo in front of a landmark, and then return to the airport.

Last year... during a 6-hour layover at Chicago airport, I took an Uber out to visit Millennium Park, saw the Chicago Bean, and had a Chicago hot dog. The flight was $170. I saved $200 and got to explore Chicago for the first time.

You can create even more creative routes using the "Multi-city" option on Kayak.

For example, LA → San Antonio → Miami. Spend 8 hours in San Antonio walking along the River Walk, and as a tip, it's convenient to leave your luggage at the airport's luggage storage. Many airports offer such services these days.

Spirit, Frontier, Allegiant... they are cheap, but they sell tickets at low prices and charge extra for luggage.

Some places even charge extra for a small backpack, so make sure to check the total cost when booking your ticket.

Big cities often have 2-3 airports, right? For example, New York has JFK, LGA, and EWR. Try departing from Burbank instead of LAX, or Love Field instead of DFW.

Sometimes the price difference can be as much as $100. Kayak automatically searches multiple airports, so you can just leave it and compare.

Buying flight tickets cheaply is ultimately a matter of information and requires a bit of strategy.

While others take direct flights, I take layovers, explore, and travel cheaply, using the savings to enjoy delicious local food.

If you have time, awareness, and a bit of courage – you can always find cheap flight tickets.
