Jacksonville is a city located at the northeastern tip of Florida and is the largest city by area in the continental United States.
It covers an area of about 874 square miles (approximately 2,264 square kilometers), which is larger than New York City. However, its population is around 950,000, making it the most populous city in Florida. In terms of size, it ranks among the major cities in the U.S., yet the name Jacksonville is less known compared to other Florida cities like Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. This can be seen as one of the city's charms.
Jacksonville is located in Duval County, and in 1968, a historic government consolidation merged the city and county into a single administrative unit. As a result, the city boundaries became the county boundaries, giving it a much larger jurisdiction compared to most cities in the U.S. It stretches along the Atlantic coast while also extending inland across Florida. The St. Johns River flows through the city center, serving as a symbol of the city and a dividing line for its neighborhoods.
From a tourism perspective, Jacksonville offers a variety of attractions. To the northeast of downtown are Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Atlantic Beach, which are Atlantic coast beaches. The water quality is good and relatively uncrowded, unlike tourist-heavy areas like Miami or Fort Lauderdale. As a beach city, it is great for surfing, fishing, and kayaking. A little further south of downtown is the historic city of St. Augustine, the oldest European settlement in the U.S., located about 40-45 minutes by car from Jacksonville.
Within the city, the Riverside and Avondale districts are popular for their sights and dining options. Historic buildings are preserved, and there are many boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants. It's pleasant to stroll along the Riverwalk and enjoy views of the river, and the Riverside Arts Market, an outdoor art market, is held every Saturday. The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is a popular attraction for families and is one of the largest zoos in the southeastern U.S. The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens, located along the St. Johns River, is particularly famous for the quality of its collection and its gardens.
Sports are also an important part of Jacksonville's identity. The NFL team Jacksonville Jaguars plays at EverBank Stadium. The Florida-Georgia Football Game, held every fall, is one of the biggest college football rivalries in the U.S. and turns the entire city into a festive atmosphere during that time. The minor league baseball team Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp also provides enjoyment for baseball fans.
Economically, Jacksonville is centered around finance, military, healthcare, and logistics. The Naval Air Station Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport contribute to a significant population of military personnel and civilians. The Mayo Clinic Florida campus is located north of Jacksonville, attracting many visitors for medical tourism. Financial companies like Fidelity and Bank of America have regional offices in the city. The immigrant community, including Koreans, is primarily distributed towards Mandarin, Southside, and Fleming Island.
