"Get behind me, Satan!"

This cry is not simply a word of anger or curse in the Bible.
It is a declaration of spiritual authority,
a proclamation commanding heavenly order so that evil beings can no longer stand.

"Get behind me, Satan" in the Bible – Original Text and Context

This phrase appears in the New Testament in Matthew 4:10.
It is the scene where Jesus is tempted by Satan after fasting for 40 days in the wilderness.

"Jesus said to him, 'Get behind me, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.'"
— Matthew 4:10

Jesus firmly confronted Satan's three temptations (1. Turn stones into bread, 2. Jump from the temple, 3. Worship me and I will give you the glory of the world) with the Word of God,
and it is in response to the third temptation that He says this.
"Get behind me, Satan."

Why is Satan so afraid of Jesus?

In the Bible, the devil (Satan, the evil one) is a being of lies, temptation, and division.
But at the same time, he is a creature that must absolutely submit to God.

So why is he so powerless before Jesus?

1. Because Jesus is God

  • John 1:1: "In the beginning was the Word... and the Word was God."

  • Jesus is the Word and essence of God,
and Satan can never stand against God's authority.

2. Jesus' words have authority

  • Mark 1:27 "They were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, 'What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.'"

  • It is not just simple words, but the Word of creation and command.
Satan must submit to Jesus' every word.

3. Jesus is without sin

  • Satan attacks human sin and weakness.
But because Jesus is sinless, there is no place for Satan to stand.

4. The cross of Jesus signifies Satan's ultimate defeat

  • Colossians 2:15 "He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him."

  • Satan is a legally defeated being after Jesus' victory on the cross.
His power is gradually fading, and he will kneel before the name of Jesus.

Theological Summary of This Proposition

"Satan must inevitably fall before the name of Jesus."
This is not just a religious symbol,
but a spiritual reality,
and the basis of authority that believers must hold on to.

The Message for Us Today

The phrase "Get behind me, Satan" is not a special incantation that only Jesus can say.
It is a spiritual authority that those who believe in the name of Jesus Christ,
and are under His authority can also proclaim.

James 4:7
"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

What the devil fears is ultimately 'Jesus Christ' Himself,
His words, His name, His cross.
When we proclaim that name in faith,
darkness can never overcome us.

Satan is not a terrifying being.
He has already been defeated and must submit to the authority of Jesus.
Jesus is the one whom Satan fears the most,
and as long as that name remains on our lips,
darkness must inevitably flee.

"Get behind me, Satan!"
Proclaim it boldly in your life today.
Light does not fear darkness.
