Jacksonville, being the largest city by area in the continental United States, boasts a scale of parks and green spaces that is hard to compare with other cities.
A significant portion of the city is made up of conservation areas, parks, and riverfront green spaces. The city of Jacksonville operates over 400 parks, covering a total area of more than 80,000 acres. Some of these locations are among the most notable natural spaces not just in Florida, but across the Southeastern United States.
Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park is a 450-acre park located in the Jacksonville Beach area, north of Atlantic Beach.
With its beach along the Atlantic, freshwater lakes, walking trails, and camping facilities, it is one of the most popular parks in Jacksonville. Visitors can enjoy surfing, swimming, kayaking, and camping all in one place. It is particularly busy on weekends, especially with families. The walking paths and bike trails are well maintained.
The Jacksonville Arboretum and Gardens is an urban natural space located in the Southside area. Spanning 73 acres, it preserves a variety of trees, plants, and wildlife habitats.
With several walking trails and boardwalks, it is a great place for a quiet stroll. There is no admission fee, making it a popular spot for early morning exercise or nature observation. It is also recommended as a space for nature education for families with young children.
Treaty Oak Park is located along the St. Johns River, south of downtown. The park's name comes from the large live oak tree that is hundreds of years old found here.
This tree is one of Jacksonville's living historical symbols and is known as one of the largest oak trees in the United States. Being a riverside park, it is a pleasant place to walk while enjoying views of the St. Johns River. There are boat docks and picnic areas nearby.
Additionally, Johna Danforth Park towards Jacksonville Beach, Planet Fitness Park, and the Riverwalk along the St. Johns River are also popular green spaces enjoyed by Jacksonville residents.
