Grand Rapids is located in the lower western part of Michigan, about 30 miles east of Lake Michigan, in the Grand River basin. With a population of approximately 200,000 (based on the 2020 census), it is the second-largest city in Michigan after Detroit, and the metropolitan statistical area has a population of about 1.1 million. Within a 50-mile radius (about 80 km), there are various cities that make it a great base for exploring the surrounding area.

First, we cannot overlook Muskegon, located about 35 miles to the northwest.

With a population of around 38,000, it is a port city situated at the point where Muskegon Lake meets Lake Michigan. Muskegon State Park is famous for its sandy beaches and dunes along the Lake Michigan shoreline, and in winter, it features a unique luge track. In summer, a ferry operates from Muskegon to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, making it a popular outing spot for Korean families.

Holland, located about 30 miles to the west, is a city built by 19th-century Dutch immigrants, and traces of Dutch culture remain throughout the area. With a population of about 33,000, it is nationally famous for the Tulip Time Festival held every May. Downtown features a restored Dutch windmill called 'De Zwaan,' which is open for tours. It is also a college town, home to Hope College, and has a well-developed downtown area with restaurants, cafes, and boutique shopping.

About 25 miles to the southeast is Allegan.

With a population of around 5,000, it is a small county seat and the administrative center of Allegan County. Known for its kayaking and canoeing course called Kal-Haven, as well as the Allegan State Game Area, it is popular among outdoor enthusiasts. It is also a destination for retirees or those preferring a quiet rural lifestyle.

Kalamazoo, located about 50 miles to the south, is the second most important city in the region after Grand Rapids.

With a population of about 72,000, it is a college town home to Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College. It is considered one of the birthplaces of American craft beer culture, featuring famous breweries like Bell's Brewery. Kalamazoo is also home to the headquarters of global medical device companies like Stryker, making it an economically strong city.

Ionia, located about 30 miles to the east, is a small city with a population of around 11,000. The Ionia Free Fair, held every summer, is one of the largest county fairs in Michigan, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. It has a strong agricultural community character and is also known for housing a correctional facility.

Greenville, located to the northeast, is a small city with a population of about 8,000 and serves as the center of Montcalm County. It acts as a commercial hub for the surrounding rural areas and is located on the way to northern Michigan. Historically known for refrigerator manufacturing, the area has recently diversified its manufacturing base.

Big Rapids is a city with a population of about 10,000, home to Ferris State University, resulting in a large student population. It is located along the upper Grand River, making it a hub for water activities like kayaking and fishing.

The cities within a 50-mile radius each have their own unique attractions, providing a wealth of options for Korean families living in Grand Rapids who are considering day trips or overnight getaways.

If you want beaches and sand dunes along Lake Michigan, Muskegon or Holland are ideal. For a college town atmosphere and craft beer culture, Kalamazoo is the place to go, while Allegan or Ionia are suitable for those seeking a quiet rural vibe.
