For those considering a move to Palm Springs, one of the key factors to check, along with housing prices and weather, is the availability of hospitals.

Especially for those preparing for retirement or living with parents, the most common questions are "Is there an emergency room nearby?" and "Is there a large hospital?" Today, I will introduce you to JFK Memorial Hospital, which serves the eastern Coachella Valley.

JFK Memorial Hospital is a general hospital located in Indio. It takes about 25 to 30 minutes by car from downtown Palm Springs, and it is much closer from Palm Desert or La Quinta. Therefore, it is primarily used by residents of Indio, Coachella, and La Quinta rather than those living in Palm Springs.

At first, some people might wonder if it is the "John F. Kennedy Foundation Hospital" just by the name, but it is currently a regional hub hospital under the Desert Care Network, which is part of Tenet Healthcare. It operates a 24-hour emergency room and serves as a general hospital capable of treating internal medicine, surgery, and various inpatient treatments.

What I feel in the U.S. is that the health insurance I have is much more important than the hospital itself. In Korea, you can just go to the nearest large hospital, but in the U.S., the hospital you can go to can vary depending on whether you have HMO or PPO insurance. Therefore, before moving, it is advisable to check if your insurance recognizes this hospital as In-Network. This can significantly reduce your out-of-pocket medical expenses.

However, emergencies are a bit different. In life-threatening situations like severe chest pain or a car accident, calling 911 takes precedence over insurance.

In the U.S., the principle of emergency medical care is to transport patients to the nearest emergency room, so you don't need to worry too much.

Looking at the entire Coachella Valley, the roles of hospitals are naturally divided. In Palm Springs, there is Desert Regional Medical Center, which handles trauma care, and in Rancho Mirage, Eisenhower Health is known for its high level of medical care. Then, in the eastern Indio area, JFK Memorial Hospital is responsible for the healthcare of local residents. This way, patients are not concentrated in one hospital, and medical services are provided regionally.

Using pharmacies is also not difficult. Large pharmacies like CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid are located throughout Palm Springs and Coachella Valley, making it easy to get prescriptions or purchase over-the-counter medications. However, unlike in Korea, where pharmacists explain the dosage in detail, if you are not comfortable with English, it is much easier to prepare a translation app or go with family.

Palm Springs is not an area with dozens of hospitals like a big city, but looking at the entire Coachella Valley, the medical infrastructure is better than expected. There are large hospitals with different roles within 30 minutes of Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, and Indio.

Ultimately, it is best not to have to visit a hospital regularly, but when the need arises, just knowing that there is a reliable hospital nearby can provide great peace of mind.
