Where to Choose a Home in Burke Based on School Districts - Burke - 1

When moving to Burke, one of the most common pieces of advice I heard was.

"If you have kids, check the schools before the house."

At first, I thought that since all of Burke is part of the Fairfax County Public Schools district, the schools must all be decent. However, when I started looking for homes, I realized that even within Burke, the assigned schools vary depending on the address.

I actually saw someone who liked a house enough to sign a contract, only to find out later that it was not in the desired school district, leading them to reconsider their move. For families with children, checking school assignments is just as important as home prices or commute distances.

One of the schools often mentioned in Burke is Lake Braddock Secondary School.

It is a school that includes both middle and high school levels, with a relatively high graduation rate and a variety of AP courses for students preparing for college. As a result, some parents actively seek homes in the Lake Braddock district.

This demand has led to steady interest in family homes in areas like Cherry Run, Fox Lair, and parts of Burke Centre.

Personally, I think Cherry Run has a great neighborhood vibe that reflects the essence of Burke.

There are many 3-4 bedroom single-family homes, and the area is filled with trees and greenery, making it a good fit for families looking for a quiet suburban lifestyle rather than a busy city.

Burke Centre has a slightly different appeal.

It is a large residential community that was planned from the start, divided into five sections: The Woods, The Oaks, The Commons, The Ponds, and The Landings.

It features a pool, community facilities, tennis courts, and basketball courts, with walking paths and bike trails connecting various parts of the neighborhood.

Being able to walk, bike, and swim in the neighborhood without having to travel far on weekends is a surprisingly big advantage for families with kids.

If commuting is important, areas like Fox Lair are worth considering. It is conveniently located near the Rolling Road VRE station, making it practical for commuters heading to Washington, DC.

Since many people in Burke work for the federal government or related sectors, there are quite a few who prioritize VRE accessibility.

If you enjoy nature, the area around Burke Lake Park is also attractive.

On weekend mornings, you can enjoy outdoor activities like walking, hiking, and fishing without a long drive, making this environment an important factor for families with children when choosing a home.

However, there is one crucial thing to remember when looking for a home in Burke.

You can't just trust the school names listed on real estate websites or what neighbors say.

The school assignment boundaries can be quite detailed, and a difference of just one street or a few blocks can change the assigned school. There is also a possibility that the school boundaries themselves may change.

So, when you find a home you like, it's safest to check the address directly using the official Boundary Locator from Fairfax County Public Schools.

If I were to move back to Burke with kids, I would prioritize things in this order.

Check the schools, check the commute, and then look at the house.

A beautiful kitchen can be remodeled later, but the school assignment area is something I can't change.
