Living in Arlington sometimes makes you wonder, "How much bigger can this city get?"
Just a few years ago, the area around AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Field felt very much like a sports-centric space, but it is now transforming into something entirely different. At the center of this transformation is the Loews Arlington Hotel and Convention Center.
This hotel officially opens in February 2024. Its scale is overwhelming.
It is a massive hotel with 21 stories and 888 rooms. The construction cost was a staggering $550 million, comparable to investments in regional airports or large development projects.
The location is also perfect. It sits between Globe Life Field and AT&T Stadium.
It is within walking distance of baseball games, NFL games, concerts, World Cup matches, and major exhibitions.
It can essentially be considered the heart of Arlington's entertainment district.
Next door is Live! by Loews - Arlington. This hotel has 14 stories and approximately 300 rooms, and it is connected to the popular Texas Live! entertainment complex. Combined, the two hotels offer a total of 1,188 rooms.
The scale of the convention facilities is even more impressive. The total event space, including the Arlington Convention Center, spans about 266,000 square feet.
In particular, the main ballroom is approximately 51,000 square feet, making it one of the largest in North Texas.
This facility is capable of hosting large conferences and industry expos that previously took place in downtown Dallas or Fort Worth.

What Arlington city officials expect is not just an increase in tourism.
They aim to attract visitors year-round for corporate conferences, medical conventions, technology exhibitions, and international sports events. The strategy is to transform from a city that only attracts crowds during NFL games or Major League seasons into a city with a thriving economy 365 days a year.
Room rates vary significantly depending on the event schedule. Typically, during the off-peak weekdays, rates at Loews Arlington start around $250 to $350 per night. On weekends or during major events, prices can rise to over $400 to $600. During NFL games, World Cup events, or major concerts, some rooms can exceed $700.
Live! by Loews is relatively more affordable. It is often booked at rates between $220 and $320, and during popular game schedules, prices can rise above $400. Including taxes and hotel fees, the actual payment amount is often 15-20% higher than the displayed price.
It's not just about the number of rooms. The hotel features a resort-style pool, several restaurants and bars, spa facilities, large meeting rooms, and a premium lounge, effectively serving as a comprehensive tourist complex.
However, from a resident's perspective, this development is not entirely welcome. While large development projects can invigorate local businesses and create jobs,
they also bring challenges such as rising real estate prices and increased living costs.
Rental prices for apartments near the Arlington entertainment district have steadily risen in recent years, and as new developments continue, this pressure may increase. This duality of excitement and concern is why long-term residents feel both joy and apprehension.
Nevertheless, a sober assessment reveals that the Loews Arlington project is a symbolic development that elevates Arlington's status as a city.
Once perceived merely as a "sports city between Dallas and Fort Worth," it is now evolving into a city capable of hosting international sports events and large conventions simultaneously.
The $550 million hotel is not just a building; it represents a significant investment in Arlington's future.
With the World Cup and various international events on the horizon, there are ample reasons to watch how this hotel will impact Arlington's economy.
