People who are new to Burke often ask a common question.
"Exactly where does Burke start and end?" It seems like a simple question, but the answer is quite complex.
Burke is not an incorporated city but an unincorporated community, so its administrative boundaries are not officially defined.
The area generally referred to as Burke corresponds to the ZIP Code 22015, which is managed by the Burke Post Office.
In terms of ZIP Codes, Burke primarily uses two. The main area is 22015, but there are some overlapping areas with adjacent regions.
Even within 22015, the area is internally divided, with the main Burke area and Burke Centre being designated as separate Census-Designated Places (CDPs).
As of 2020, the population of the Burke CDP was 42,312, while the Burke Centre CDP had a separate population of 17,518.
Burke Centre is particularly a planned community. Spanning 1,700 acres, it is divided into five sub-communities: The Commons, The Landings, The Oaks, The Ponds, and The Woods. Developed in the 1970s and 80s, it is now one of the best-maintained residential areas in Burke. The Burke Centre VRE (Virginia Railway Express) station also provides good commuting access to DC.
The boundaries with adjacent areas are also important in real life. To the east of Burke is Springfield, to the north are Annandale and Fairfax, and to the west and south is Fairfax Station.
All these areas are within Fairfax County, and since Burke is also under that county, the administrative services and school districts are not significantly different. However, the neighborhood vibes of "Burke" and "Springfield" can feel a bit different.
School district boundaries are another map to consider. The Burke area falls under Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), with Lake Braddock Secondary School being a notable institution. The assignment of elementary and middle schools by neighborhood can impact property values, so many people pay close attention to this area.
Knowing "which school district our neighborhood belongs to" ultimately ties directly to real estate value. When looking for a home in Burke, be sure to check not only the ZIP Code but also the school district boundaries.
