The generative AI 'DeepSeek' from China has completely overturned the semiconductor market. On that day, Nvidia's stock plummeted by a staggering 17% in just one day, resulting in approximately 846 trillion won evaporating in market capitalization. This is said to be the worst record for the amount lost in a single day in the history of global stock markets.
DeepSeek is an open-source AI model developed through High Flyer Capital, created by Chinese hedge fund manager Liang Wenping. The development cost is only 1/20th of that of existing large language models, yet its performance is reported to rival that of OpenAI's models. Established in 2023, DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd. aims to develop AGI, or general artificial intelligence.
With such efficiency and completeness combined, it was only natural that the existing order of the AI market would be overturned.
On the day this news broke, the New York stock market was literally a 'shock day.' Tech stocks wobbled en masse, and investors began flocking to safe assets. The S&P 500 index fell by 1.46%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq plummeted by 3.07%. In contrast, the Dow Jones index rose by 0.65%, as defensive stocks showed relatively stable performance.
In particular, the semiconductor sector suffered the most. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped by 9.12% in just one day, with major companies like Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom all experiencing declines. The market was in shock, and interpretations among experts varied widely.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella expressed an optimistic outlook, stating, "As AI technology becomes cheaper and more advanced, the market will ultimately grow explosively," adding, "This is an unstoppable trend." Conversely, some financial institutions like JP Morgan warned that "the AI investment frenzy is too overheated." Thus, opinions were sharply divided on whether to view the same event as the 'beginning of innovation' or a 'sign of a bubble.'
However, one thing is clear: this DeepSeek incident is not just a simple happening. As AI technology advances rapidly, it is shaking the existing industrial structure and investment patterns to their core. Nvidia's sharp decline may be the first major inflection point of the AI era. At the same time, it is also a signal of the transition to a faster and more efficient generation of AI.
The market was chaotic, but only those companies that endure this change will become the winners of the next generation. This DeepSeek incident is just the prologue.
