Honestly, a few thousand dollars in the U.S. can disappear faster than you think.
Housing costs, medical expenses, education fees, insurance premiums... just having a few thousand dollars in your account does not suddenly stabilize your life.
You can earn money again.
But today's self, current health, and present opportunities will not come back.
Investing in yourself is not a luxury.
It is a survival strategy for living well.
Language and Skills
In an immigrant society, English and specialized skills are far more powerful assets than your bank balance.
Conversational English, certifications, coding, technical training.
This does not diminish with inflation. In fact, it increases in value over time.
Health
As you age into your 40s and 50s, your body starts sending signals one by one.
In expensive America, losing your health can make all the money you've saved disappear in an instant.
Gyms, health check-ups, supplements, exercise... these are not costs, they are insurance.
Relationships
In immigrant life, people are assets.
Interactions with good people, time with family, creating memories.
This becomes real strength in times of crisis.
Hobbies and Stress Management
If you only work, you will wear yourself out. Whether it's fishing, camping, or exercising, anything is good. You need a breathing space to last long.
Experience and Travel
If you only repeat home and work, life becomes too narrow.
Sometimes, you need to intentionally broaden your horizons.
Those experiences ultimately deepen your thoughts and bring opportunities.
Living a life where you just look at the numbers in your bank account and feel secure is more dangerous than you think.
It is much safer to stand confidently and grow yourself, even if it feels a bit uneasy.
Language, skills, health, relationships, experience.
These five are assets that will not crumble in any recession.
This is something no one can take away, it is solely my own wealth.
May 2026 be a year where you prioritize the value of yourself over the numbers in your bank account.
